Recently, the Markham Irish clubhouse was filled with familiar faces as family, friends and members of the rugby community came together to celebrate the life of Ken Smith.
Ken was a member of the Irish for more than 60 years and played an important role in the club’s history. His contribution to rugby extended well beyond the club, having served as selector for Rugby Canada and being inducted into the Rugby Ontario Hall of Fame in 2002. Ken passed away on January 22, 2026.
The celebration was well attended, with many former Irish players, past and present Executive members, and longtime friends of the club coming together to share stories, laughs and memories with his family.
Most importantly, the day was about celebrating Ken and the life he shared with so many people.
Ken's family would like to thank everyone who helped out, and shared that it was exactly the kind of celebration he would have loved, and that there was no better place to bring everyone together than the Irish rugby club.
We were honoured to host the celebration and to see so many members of the community come together to remember Ken. It was a fitting reminder of the friendships and connections that make this sport so special, many of which last well beyond the playing days.
