Earlier this season, our rugby community faced a profound loss with the passing of Tim Chapman, a beloved member and leader whose impact extended far beyond the pitch. Tim’s passion for the sport, his unwavering integrity, and his dedication to fostering teamwork left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege to know him.
On Saturday, August 9th, we hosted a memorial tribute at our club. The event coincided with the Men’s final regular season match against the Niagara Wasps, where Tim played after his time with the Markham Irish.
To honor Tim’s memory and the values he represented, the Markham Irish Rugby Club is proud to introduce the Tim Chapman Memorial Award for Outstanding Leadership. This award is selected from our U16 and U18 boys and girls teams and recognizes a young athlete who embodies Tim’s spirit by demonstrating a deep love for rugby, leading with integrity, and inspiring teammates through their actions and character.
During the event, this inaugural award was presented to a remarkable young player whose leadership reflects the qualities Tim exemplified. Our recipient is a U18 athlete who also stepped up to play with the Women’s team this season. She attended both Junior and Senior practices and games with a dedication comparable to that of a full-time player. Her passion for rugby is clear in every training session and match. She has grown tremendously in her position as a fullback, always has a positive attitude, and encourages her teammates through every practice and game regardless of the drill or score. While she may not be the loudest voice on the field, her leadership shines through her determination, her actions, and the genuine care she shows for her teammates both on and off the pitch.
With the generous support of the Goodhand family, and on behalf of the Markham Irish, we are delighted to present the first-ever Tim Chapman Award for Outstanding Leadership to Kaitlyn Yu. Kaitlyn, may you carry Tim’s spirit forward every time you step onto the pitch.
